How do you handle comp time with classified employees? As administrators, we all understand there are going to be times in which we need those classified (and salaried) personnel to work a ball game/dance/field trip etc. in order to have enough adult supervision at the events. Sometimes, those needs may require you to use a classified employee that may have already worked 40 hours during his/her workweek. Does you county allow you to offer comp time in these situations? Do you have difficulties getting those classified employees to work over their expected work times without receiving time-and-a-half pay? Do you allow comp time to be used only on teacher workdays or can it be used before/after a regular school day? Share you thoughts and ideas……

As an administrator, have you had any negative incidents when dealing with classified employees? When I was in Cabarrus County as an assistant principal, we had a classfied employee who refused to work athletic events even though this person was working less than 40 hours per week. She said working ball games after school hours was not part of her job description as a teacher’s assistant and part-time bus driver. After being written up by the principal for not working a basketball game even though she had not worked more than 40 hours per week, she complained to the personnel director and a meeting was called between the classified employee, the principal and the personnel director. Instead of the principal being able to lead the school academically, he was having to explain himself & his decisions to central office personnel. Any stories you want to tell concerning classified employees and the FLSA????????
